老子《道德经》说:“道之为物,惟恍惟惚。惚兮恍兮,其中有象,恍兮惚兮,其中有物。”“象”是道的体现,我们要从象中去发现道,则必须“澄怀味象”。只有以“身”所“盘桓”、“目”所“绸缪”,才能“应目会心”,做到“以形写形”、“以色貌色”,从而真实、细致、深入地把握自然及物象的各种特征,从中体悟“道”,使情感得以畅舒,使绘画成为一种“含道”“澄怀”之游。正如白居易所说:“画无常工,以似为工;学无常师,以真为师。……然后知学在骨髓者,自心术得;工侔造化者,由天和来。”或如唐张璪所言:“外师造化,中得心源。”
