ITU News: Competition and technological developments are accelerating the dramatic changes in the cellular market in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CJS). For the cellular and PCS markets in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, the latest research from the Pyramid Research Institute shows cellular subscribers in the region are expected to reach 5.5 million in 2000. This growth will be driven by intensifying competition and further relaxation of policies. Eastern Europe, Belarus and the CIS currently have 50 cellular operating companies serving more than 500,000 subscribers. Poland and Hungary will have over 1 million users at the turn of the century.
