Ministers of Science and Technology from African countries held their first meeting in July 1987 for the first time in 13 years to discuss changing poverty and inconsistent science and technology policies in Africa. Ministers gathered in the Tanzanian city of Aracho a week before African scientists held their first science conference in Brazzaville, the capital of the Congo, in an attempt to find ways to improve the status of science and technology in Africa. The representatives of the two conferences agreed that the future prosperity in Africa depends mainly on the enhancement and rational application of science and technology. Scientists and veteran ministers consider the need to strengthen collaboration among African nations as no single African country can afford the costs of high-quality research and development on its own. In Brazzaville, scientists advocate the founding of the first non-science and technology association in Africa, headquartered in Brazzaville
