The Scarlet Letter is the first novel by American romantic novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and the first symbolism novel in the United States. Hawthorne was deeply influenced by Puritanism, Transcendentalism and mystical philosophy, and was also exposed to the historical period of the rapid development of capitalism and the dramatic changes in social structure. His mental state is extremely confused and contradictory. The article holds that Hawthorne’s contradictory psychology has been fully reflected in the form of double negation in the use of the “Scarlet Letter” language. This article tries to discuss the stylistic function of the double negative language form in “Scarlet Letter”, reveal the relationship between the use of double negation and the psychology of Hawthorne’s contradiction, and analyze the role of double negation in promoting the understanding of the theme of the novel.
