  【Abstract】Recently, junior middle students seem not to be interested in English. What caused this situation? In my essay, it analyzes the traditional teaching approaches and situation in recent China, introduces some useful and meaningful teaching approaches that have been used recently, and then puts forward methods to arouse their interest.

  1. Background and circumstances of English learning in China
  1.1 Traditional English teaching in junior middle school
  1.1.1 It is necessary to do memorize words in learning, and the test is also so important
  1.1.2 Pay no attention to the students’ interests in junior middle school
  1.1.3 Using certain and boring methods to train the students which causes their low interest in learning English
  1.2 The tendency of teaching in future
  1.2.1 Base on students not on teachers
  In the traditional teaching method above, teachers play dominant roles in the teaching process, and they do not care about their audiences’ feelings, on the contrary, the students have to be compelled to get the knowledge points from their leader——teacher whether they are enjoyable or not.
  1.2.2 Arouse their interest in learning English actively
  Two thousand years ago, Confucius said: “the person who wants to know is better than the one who has been known, and the person who is interested in something is better than the one who wants to know.” So the interest is very vital in learning English.
  1.2.3 Provide a relatively relaxing English learning environment for them
  We know that English is a tool of communication and the connection between China and other countries and it has been more and more frequent. So under that big environment, it is necessary for a person to learn English without laying behind.
  2. Techniques for arousing students’ interests in learning English
  Several learning English methods
  2.1Happiness teaching method
  The psychological research shows that a person under joyful mood will be active and sensitive to everything and good at doing memory work. Happiness teaching method makes good use of this character, catches the development of students’ intellect in the optimal period and fully digs out joyful factors in the textbook.
  2.2 Teaching method with mother tongue
  Mother tongue is a more useful factor in teaching method for the reason is that we think and solve our problems in our own process not in English process, and meanwhile, there are great differences of cultures and backgrounds between Chinese and English.   2.3 Setting up good teacher-student relationship
  In teaching process, the teacher should regard them as partners; return the time of class to them. In other words, the teacher attaches the importance to emotional factors and equally communicates with them in the process of thinking. So the students will be interested in English learning and get great joys.
  3. Conclusion
  Interest is greatly important in English learning. As the students are interested in English, they are conscious to improve themselves quickly and they will be fond of English learning later, their capabilities of learning can be developed soon. However, English learning is not based on interest. We should attach great importance to teacher’s role for the teacher is the key figure in the class. The teacher not only teaches them knowledge but also trains them to be self-confident and strong-willed. Moreover, teachers will be their friends to try their utmost to make English fun and give them more freedom to equally take part in the activities, at the same time, enrich their lives.
