In this paper the abundance, types and thermal evolution of organic material are studied in the Langshan Formation of Lower Cretaceous in the Cuoqin basin. This formation is a suit of carbonate rocks and 1493.4 m thick. For hydrocarbon source rocks in it, the average content of organic material is 0. 12%, the contents of chloroform asphalt ’A’ are mostly 40-60 ppm, and the hydrocarbon-generating potential capacity is more than 0.25 mg/g. The types of organic material are sapropel and sapropel-humus. The thermal evolution of organic material was principally at the mature stage. It is estimated that the thickness of hydrocarbon source rocks in the Langshan Formation is 579.6 m, in which 13.3 m is good hydrocarbon source rocks in quality, making up 2% of their total thickness, 416.5 m is medium, making up 72%, and 149.8 m is bad, making up 26%. On the Whole, hydrocarbon source rocks in the Langshan Formation are medium in quality.
