This article describes an ongoing pilot study of gas injection that can improve oil recovery in a highly mature oilfield. This pilot test of small size and low cost has successfully demonstrated to people the commercial value of gas injection technology before large-scale applications. The mature oil fields in the article have undergone more than 70 years of waterflood development. At present, a non-mixed gas injection technology can convert viscous water flooding into a gravity-stabilized membrane drainage technology that uses gas to propel the leading edge. The article deals with the pilot design, implementation, test results, a three-dimensional geological porous fluid simulation model, experimental dynamics, experience and the overall design of the existing field program.
