在环境中设置雕塑必须有适于雕塑存在的空间环境。如果在放置雕塑的周围是杂乱无章的环境,或没有相互呼应的空间环境形成协调的统一关系,雕塑就失去了存在的意义。一般来说,雕塑的设计与设置应与周围的空间环境互相联系、相互协调、相互作用。如把雕塑设置在城市的广场,它在广场的空间环境中应起到凝聚和点缀及美化环境的作用,赋予广场空间环境以新的面貌,成为构成城市空间环境的一个重要组成因素。
