Objective To investigate the effects of corticosteroids on bone metabolism and calcium-regulated hormones in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods Radioimmunoassay was used to determine the serum levels of osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone and calcitonin in patients with long-term corticosteroid administration. Results The levels of serum osteocalcin and calcitonin in patients with SLE treated with corticosteroids decreased significantly, while the levels of serum parathyroid hormone increased significantly compared with the control group (P < 0.01), suggesting that corticosteroids can inhibit bone formation by reducing osteoblast activity. Conclusions Serum osteocalcin can be used as an effective biochemical indicator for monitoring bone metabolism in long-term corticosteroid-treated SLE patients.
