Metonymy is a general linguistic phenomenon, but also a way of thinking and behavior. Its essence is to use one entity to refer to another entity that is associated with it. This study explores the metonymy of “face and face” in English and Chinese from the perspective of cognition and further confirms the universality of cognition and cultural relativity in metonymy through the comparison of English and Chinese, which reflects the similarities and differences of human cognition, To a certain extent, it also makes up for the current lack of research on the metonymy of “face and face”.
