解放前的上海,这个灯红酒绿、纸醉金迷的十里洋场,是旧中国典型的半封建、半殖民地的大都市。它既是国民党反革命的大本营,“四一二”大屠杀就是从这里开始的,也是帝国主义殖民主义的策源地,外国租借地鳞次栉比。同时,上海也是中国无产阶级解放运动的发祥地,工人劳动大军聚集和文化界人士荟萃之地。一九二九年秋,邓拓背着简单的行李,穿着朴素的衣衫,踏进了上海。邓拓怀抱救国雄心壮志,进入上海光华大学。正如他自己题为《书城》的诗句中所说:“不卜文章流海内,莫教诗酒误虚名。得侔前辈追真意,便是今生入世诚。”光华大学有着爱国运动的光荣传统,邓拓刚入校门,就听到学校“读书勿忘救国,救国勿忘读书”的口号;鲁迅于一九二七年十一月
