With the theme of “Towards Modern ”, the “300 Years of British Art Exhibition” was exhibited at the China Millennium Monument World Art Museum in Autumn / Winter 2012. This allowed us to examine the art history of British art in the recent 300 years. “Modernization ” seems to be a relatively long process for British art. Before this century, the development of British art seems to be outside the mainstream art in Europe, and the art of continental Europe is completely out of line, and therefore naturally ignored. Why did this happen? This was first and foremost the geographical isolation between the UK and the European continent. The British Isles were surrounded by the sea and far from the European continent. As a natural barrier, the United Kingdom kept the United Kingdom from fighting the two world wars. At the same time, it also made it restricted in the exchange and development of foreign cultures and formed a relatively closed and conservative national character with obedience to conventions and nostalgia, the so-called “island nation consciousness.”
