The Death and Life of Megacities in the United States, a classic masterpiece in the field of urban research and urban planning, has had a lasting and profound impact on the then American debate on urban renewal and the future of the city since its publication in 1961. Taking the big cities of the United States such as New York and Chicago as examples, the author examines the basic elements of urban structure and their ways of functioning in urban life, challenging the traditional urban planning theory. While public opinion unanimously called for the removal of slum areas and the opening up of urban space, Jacobs proposed to increase the diversity, density and vitality of the urban population and to bring people and activities together to form an enjoyable chaos. The book sets forth some of the basic elements for enhancing the diversity of local communities: one street or one community must include several basic functions, neighborhoods should be short, buildings must be diverse in terms of age, status and function, populations must be dense, and so on. The advent of the Chinese version of the book, for our current urban planning and urban construction of great reference.
