2.1 Basics Maya texts are usually arranged in a square grid like a chessboard, even in manuscript books. The texts arranged in this way are generally written from left to right and written or read in two columns from top to bottom. If the rows are marked as A, B, C, D, ..., the columns are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, ... then the reading order is A1, B1, A2, B2, A3 ... After the end of the characters, starting from C1 and D1 read down, and so on the rest. Of course, there are exceptions to this kind of reading and writing rules, such as single-column, L-shaped, horizontal-row forms often appearing on pottery. A handful of monuments and pottery texts are to be read from right to left, even in circular order, for example on some stone altarpieces. But to emphasize that the basic order of reading and writing is from left to right, from top to bottom.
