Adams’ Theory of Regional Systems The purpose of the exposure method for black and white negatives is to obtain the full range of the tone as much as possible during the photo-enlargement phase. For black and white negatives, the principle of a regional system is based on shadow exposure, based on high-gloss development. If only a small amount of light reaches a certain area of the negative surface, no detail will be recorded in this area and the image will appear black. Adams has compromised the exposure of the negative to get rich shading details on the photo, and to obtain highlights with selective development after exposure. Applying Adams’ method reproduces the entire range of tones with optimal exposure.
