谈到张怀瓘的“神、妙、能”品评方法,人们谈的更多的是它对后来画论中品评体例的影响,而其自身体系的特征及其本身的体系渊源很少有人系统研究过,本文即着重于这方面的努力,认为古代传统文化中分品立说的传统是张怀瓘的品评体系形成的大文化背景;“神”、“妙”、“能”在张怀瓘以此立品品评之前于文艺评论中就已经有了高低的差别,这种差别是张怀瓘品评体系的直接理论基础;认为书法非“小道”而是能达道的思想观念是张怀瓘在《书断》中将能契合自然,妙造天地的书家列以神品——最高品的内在缘由。
