In 1859, 26-year-old George Huntington Hartford founded the Amape Company. At the time, New York City sold tea at a price of $1 a pound, and Hartford believes that by cutting the brokers, the price can be reduced to 30 cents. He persuaded his employer, George Gilman, to open such cheap stores and promote their first store. For example, they once used eight large horse-drawn tall red carriages to trick the streets of New York. Later, they gradually added various kinds of coffee and spices in the store, and later added many other daily merchandise. They try their best to avoid using brokers. Later, they opened more such stores. In 1865, 5 were opened, and in 1869, 11 were opened. In 1869, the name Aangpi (Atlantic Pacific Tea Company) was adopted (intended to show that they want to expand to both sides of the ocean).
