A new method of continuously quenching the surface of steel using laser beam is simulated. This method of heat treatment uses conventional inductors to preheat the quenched parts in order to reduce the temperature gradient and the resulting mechanical stress on the material being processed. The mathematical model of the process is established using 3D numerical values and the solution takes into account all the important non-linearities (the magnetic saturation curve of quenched steel and its physical properties versus temperature). A typical example is described, the results are introduced and discussed.
