宋代百姓、士人使用的砚台价格便宜,名人用砚则是众多砚藏家趋之若鹜的藏品,其价益腾。宋代是砚业蓬勃发展的时期。那么,宋代的砚价到底如何呢?普品便宜老百姓,包括士人日常使用的砚台,价格是很便宜的。生活于北宋仁宗至徽宗时期(1051—1107)的米芾,在其《砚史》的“歙砚婺源石”中,如此写道:
