This thesis mainly uses the theories of Lacan and Sartre to explore the identity crisis and the construction of the main characters Alfred Bernard and Barbarian John from the angles of “gaze ” and “anti-gaze ”. In a totalitarian world with strict hierarchical boundaries, the special identities of Bernard and John make them reduced to the heterogeneous of other people’s eyes. The gaze of others has relentlessly deconstructed their identities. The emergence of identity crisis is inevitable , While the use of anti-gaze shows the hero’s resistance and attempts to construct his own subjectivity, however, all fail. The protagonist’s sad ending shows that the gaze of the other person reveals the lack of subject. Huxley conveyed his humanistic concern by revealing the protagonist’s identity crisis.
