Gifts from the USSR In 1974, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) invited five of the nation’s largest military machine builders (Northrop, McDonnell Douglas, General Dynamics, Fairchild and Grumman) Low detectable technology to conduct a preliminary study. The latter two companies said they were not interested in participating in this kind of research and General Dynamics reacted coldly. Northrop and McDonnell Douglas, which showed significant interest, received a $ 100,000 research contract. Given the outstanding performance of Lockheed in reducing the cross-sectional area of the A-12 / SR-71s and the lobbying by Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Factory was finally invited to participate in the study.
