On December 26, 2004, a massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit Sumatra off the coast of Indonesia and triggered a massive tsunami. Many countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia were hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami, causing heavy casualties. On the night of December 29, China decided to send the first group of international rescue teams headed by Zhao Heping, deputy director of the China Earthquake Administration, to the most affected Banda Aceh in Indonesia for their international rescue.
