According to a study by Hort Science (November 2012), researchers from the Department of Horticulture, North Carolina State University, studied the effect of 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid and trimethoprim on apple thinning later in life . The use of chelating agent thinning fruit is generally in apple flowering to flowering 3 weeks, when the fruit diameter of about 16mm, after this period the fruit is generally insensitive to conventional chelating agents. The researchers studied the fruit-thinning effect of metribuzin and the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACC) using the photosystem II (PSII) inhibitor after the traditional thinning period. Field trials were conducted for 3 years in succession with the application of cinebulin at 18, 20 and 27 mm fruit average diameters in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively, and the standard dilutions of ethephon and NAA were reduced
