The “invitation” speech act is a universal (verbal) behavior common to all societies and groups. However, how to issue “invitation”, how to explain, how to respond, etc. are different because of different cultures. In other words, different societies have different social norms and different social expectations for the “invitation” speech act, which is why people of different cultural backgrounds often make mistakes when “inviting” each other.
