The FAO budget for 1986-1987 totaled 448.38 million United States dollars, of which forestry was 18,307,000 U.S. dollars, representing 4%. The forestry budget for 1984-85 accounted for 3.9% of the organization’s approved budget, at $ 16.585 million. It seems that although the rate of increase is very limited, it is not hard to see how much forestry is happening or has undergone profound changes in the global forestry sector if the amount of funds allocated to specific activities is slightly analyzed. In his 1986-1987 work plan report, the Director-General of FAO of the United Nations pointed out that forestry should focus on: protecting and restoring forest resources; providing good environmental conditions for agricultural production and maintaining soil stability; and providing fuelwood and other Forestry products to meet rapidly growing needs; rural employment opportunities and income sources through forestry; problems in tropical forests and arid regions; conservation of genetic resources; strengthening forestry planning capabilities at the national level; forestry
