Low-grade spodumene is a new addition to the ceramic product range that Futalt Minerals recently added. Production started in early 1973 and is now commercialized at our Kings Mountain North Carolina facility. Low-iron spodumene is mainly used in glass-ceramics, but will prove valuable for formulations that require the use of other ceramics with a lower iron content of the lithium oxide component. The history of the development of low-grade spodumene is very interesting and has been described in considerable detail in the “Fute” publication. From the first understanding of the demand in the early 1960s to the commercial production in 1973, it is an inevitable result of development. Low-grade spodumene is mainly caused by the invention of a lithium-aluminosilicate glass-ceramic. In response to the domestic demand for low-iron oxide lithium oxide minerals, Futeh Mineral Company embarked on a broad research program to determine the nature of iron impurities in spodumene and the method of iron removal. Two research papers were published as a result of this research, describing an effective method of removing iron from the spodumene crystal lattice
