According to the Thai Rice Export Association, in the first half of 2011, Thai rice exports totaled 6.3 million tons, an increase of 58.26% over the same period of last year; the export value was 108.78 billion 48 million baht, an increase of 37.3% over the previous year. The reason for exports exceeding the reservation target is partly due to the increased demand for rice due to natural disasters in Bangladesh and Indonesia. On the other hand, it is because the government sold part of the inventory of rice by the end of 2010. The top five countries importing Thai rice are Nigeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iraq and Iran in turn.
