新疆紫草为人们所熟知的主要是其根部含有紫草素(shikonin)及其多种衍生物,可以入药。紫草作为中药应用已有悠久的历史。我国紫草资源颇为丰富,主要品种有:1、软紫草(即新疆紫草);2、硬紫草(Lithospe rmum erythrorhizons Sieb.etZucc.);3、滇紫草(习称大紫草,OnosmaPaniculatum Bur.et Franch.);4、藏紫草(又称长花滇紫草,Onosma hookeri Var.Longiflorum Duthie)。这几种紫草品质差异较大,其中以新疆紫草品质最佳,所含紫草素及其衍生物的总量高达2.019%,所以新疆紫草已成为主要的商品紫草。新疆紫草根部呈不规则的长圆柱形,
