Yundang Lagoon is a typical highly polluted coastal shallow wetland located in the southeast of China.Dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples collected from Yundang Lagoon in spring of 2008 were characterized successfully by fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMs) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC).PARAFAC decomposed the fluorescence matrices into five independent components, including two humic-like components, two protein-like components and one xenobiotic-like component.Sewage discharge was the main source of all fluorescent components, while in situ biological activity provided another source of protein-like components. The negative correlation between the scores of individual fluorescent components and salinity showed that sewage DOM in the lagoon was obviously diluted by the input of seawater from outer bay.The large variation of the intercept of the correlation line indicated the source intensity of sewage input changes with time and this will have strong influence on the DOM dynamics within the lagoon. It is possible to trace DOC concentration via fluorescent components due to the linear relationship between the protein-like components and DOC.This study proves that the EEMs-PARAFAC is an important tool for assessing the dynamics of DOM in Yundang Lagoon and similar polluted coastal waters.
