Maxine Hong Kingstons The Woman Warrior was accomplished with great literal merit,but its reception has always been controversial.One of the debates revolves around the liberal use of Chinese historical myths and legends.While some critics embracing her rewriting of traditional source as creative and innocent others blamed her for distorting the "best known works from the most universally known body of Asian literature and lore of history".（Frank,3）This thesis strongly defends that Kingstons rewriting of Chinese traditional myths and legends is not irresponsible distortion of Chinese culture,because Chinese stories in The Woman Warrior should be read in American context.The thesis is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the controversy surrounding The Woman Warrior;the second part tries to prove why Chinese stories must change in American context;the third part intends to analyze how Chinese stories are changed to fit in American context;the fourth part draws the conclusion that Kingstons rebuilt of traditional Chinese stories is recommendable.They realistically reflect the narrators cultural disorientation and the between-word condition;they also help her to seek a Chinese-American identity.
