The post-Cold War world order is undergoing significant disruptions and headed towards prolonged uncertainty. If US-China tensions escalate, pressures on ASEAN will intensify.Scholars of International Relations expect anxiety to grow among citizens of Singapore and Southeast Asia, who may be divided on how to deal with the US and China. The study of small states has waned in the past, norm entrepreneurs such as Singapore are setting a model for other small states and even bigger states to emulate. The success of Singapore has led many scholars and government officials to study the Singapore model. The significance of the study lies in the oddness of a small country such as Singapore as a small state to become as successful and influential as it is today. In an anarchic society, traditionally it is the great powers that dominate the international arena, however in the case of Singapore as a small country it can and has played a big role in the international stage and this is untypical in the studies of international relations. This case study will fill a gap in the existing literature and shift away from the Eurocentric view of International Relations and take a look at the importance of a Small Asian State,Singapore in the Southeast Asian Region with the hope to illuminate not only the importance of small states but also the importance of multilateral organizations such as ASEAN and the United Nations, but also the significance of Singapore to these organizations and regions.
