沈从文在湘西这个孕育着楚文化的环境中成长。他接受着自然环境对生命的洗礼,纯粹地经历着种种人事,固执地将生命放逐,得到了一种生命不断前进的自然力量。他讴歌湘西世界中人性的美,生命的美,以此表达人性最真切的渴望,但这份美丽因难避当时社会的黑暗与残忍以及人物自身悲哀气质的一些情愫,总使人忧愁。美丽而忧愁成为沈从文作品的基调和色彩。沈从文以自己对人性的理解,以自己的审美取向,通过一种简单、充满温爱的自然笔法,形成独特的创作方式:美丽的表达。
