The Beijing Language and Culture University Press (BLCUP for short) is the only publishing enterprise professionalized in publishing Chinese teaching materials for foreigners. So far, it has totally published more than 3,000 kinds of Chinese teaching materials and its products have walked into over 2,000 universities and 1,000 primary and middle schools in over 60 countries and areas all over the globe. According to incomplete statistics, its products take 80% share of the Chinese teaching materials for foreign students market in China, and about 40% of the international Chinese teaching materials market. The press owns a serial of world-popular Chinese teaching materials brands, and a series of excellent Chinese learning materials represented by New Concept Chinese, New Practical Chinese Reader, Conversational Chinese 301, Chinese Paradise, Easy Steps to Chinese, which makes it internationally influential and competitive.
What makes the foreign Chinese teaching publishing of BLCUP go global? On the one hand, based on its product features, the press cooperates with language publishing firms in over 20 countries and localizes its products through copyright business to meet the needs of foreign readers learning Chinese. In ten years, it has exported1765 copyrights, ranking first in over 570 publishing firms around China. On the other hand, it is actively seeking for distribution brokers worldwide and builds a distribution network consisting of 300 distributions in 70 countries with an annual average export amount in kind of $6 million.
In recent years, Chinese culture is winning increasingly wider recognition in the world along with the rapid development of China’s economy. Some great national book exhibitions organized activities inviting China as the main guest of honor to accelerate and deepen the recognition of all nationalities about Chinese culture. Taking advantage of the platform that China as the main guest of honor provided, BLCUP elaborately plans marketing campaigns for brands copyright business products that are echoed in publishing colleagues and Confucius Institutes.
In 2013, at the key activity area of the 32nd International Istanbul Book Fair, with China being the main guest of honor, BLCUP organized a serial of activities themed on “Fenghuang scholar—Chinese digitally published product global tour”, which is divided into two subactivities—“Chinese teaching digital resource demonstration conference” and “multimedia class demonstration of Chinese Paradise”. In digital resource demonstration conference, the host introduced Chinese digitally published product published by BICU to the audiences at home and abroad, and played some representative products such as A Kaleidoscope of Chinese Culture and The Wisdom of Chinese Characters. Pleasurable activities and graceful videos attracted many Turkish audiences in the exhibition. Multimedia class demonstration of Chinese Paradise was arranged as the finale of that activity. BLCUP hired a senior Chinese teacher in Okan University Confucius Institute who, through on-site lectures, got the students the feel of Chinese culture and on-hands activities and the joy of learning Chinese, and let the audiences feel the charm of Chinese characters and Chinese language. In the recently concluded International Belgrade Book Fair in 2014, BLCUP continuously organized two important key activities: “Fenghuang scholar—the book giveaways of BLCUP to Belgrade Confucius Institute, and facilitate the friendship between Serbian & Chinese and promote the development of Serbia Confucius Institute” and “Image of China-- Panorama of audio-video product such as Part Of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage”. In the fair, BLCUP invited the vice president of Beijing Language and Culture University Mr. Qi Dexiang and dean of the University of Belgrade Confucius Institute to make speeches, and arranged the deputy director of BLCUP foreign Chinese teaching business division and senior Chinese teaching material editor Miss Tang Jiaqi introduced the books and shared her using methods and skills with teachers present; to fully present the audio-video products and help more audiences feel the unique charm of Chinese culture, when arranging “Chinese spring festival” and “Chinese food”, BLCUP handed out the special snacks in Beijing and designed Prize-Winning Quiz Session and prepared gifts with Chinese features; at the same time, to display the best image of China being a guest of honor, BLCUP elaborately prepared every detail of the activity and repeated practicing and equipping the two activities with Serbian & Chinese consecutive interpreters; the teachers of local Confucius Institution sang the famous Chinese song “Jasmine Flower” and “Seven lonely days”, which was spread far. These activities proved that BLCUP was seeking for excellence in every specific of every activity in the international fair. The activity was held in a warm atmosphere and with strong Chinese features, which was widely covered by foreign media as a highlight of the fair.
