  【Abstract】Reading and writing are two important abilities that we must master. However, these two parts are big problems for many students. Therefore, the author will talk about the strategy of improving the comprehensive quality of English reading and writing ability based on her own experience, hoping it will be helpful for other students.

  1. Reading strategy
  1.1 To enlarge vocabulary. We all know that vocabulary is the foundation of English learning, so we should develop the habit of memorizing words everyday. From my experience in words memorizing contest, we need to pay attention to the skills and methods of memorizing words, for example, we shouldn’t to memorize a word alone, but to put it in a situation sentence to remember.
  1.2 To learn system grammar knowledge. Only by mastering the grammatical knowledge of the system and the basic structure of English, can we better understand long sentences and improve English learning efficiency.So we should make full use of those complex long sentences in our textbook, digging them further and analyzing them in detail with grammatical knowledge, so that to accumulate some fixed sentence patterns and collocations.
  1.3 To stimulate English learning interest. It is difficult to improve our English ability only by learning at school, so we can take part in some activities to cultivate our interest. As the representative of English class, I often organize my classmates to read in the morning, participate in the Model United Nations Competition and Oral English Competition, and try to translate some short essays, so that I can always enjoy the fun of learning English, laying a solid foundation for English reading and writing.
  1.4 To master the methods and skills of reading. Reading is also influenced by our judgment, reasoning, induction ability and reading skills. Therefore, on the one hand, we should read, listen, ask and expand our knowledge; on the other hand, we should learn to use some reading skills to improve our reading ability. For example, using fast reading, skipping and close reading at the same time; reading questions first and then read the passage with the questions, thus improving efficiency.
  2. Writing strategy
  2.1 To do more writing exercises. Choose topics that are closely related to our study and life, stimulate our enthusiasm for writing, and broaden our thinking of writing, so that we can have something to say when we encounter open composition.   2.2 To find effective methods. Firstly, we must grasp the key information and list the outline. Secondly, we must pay attention to the details and not omit any key points. Thirdly, try to use some vocabularies, grammars and sentence patterns that we are familiar with, avoiding spelling, grammar errors or incomprehensible sentences, thereby affecting the overall expression. Finally, we must also pay attention to the cultural differences, and avoid translating Chinese verbatim into English, cultivating the ability to organize the language by thinking in English.
  2.3 To use advanced clauses to upgrade the article. Changing sentence patterns from time to time will make the article more convincing and enhance the expression of sentences.首先,学会写被动句。例如, 一篇环保作文中有这样一句话“我们必须采取有效措施来治理污染”,很多同学会这样写”We must take some effective measures to stop pollution”,而写成被动句”Some effective measures must be taken to stop pollution”则能给文章加分;其次,还可以写一些倒装和强调句,使句型丰富,比如“我从未见过我如此美丽的风景”,除了说”I have never seen such a beautiful scenery”还可以写”Never have I seen such a beautiful scenery” ;再次,摆脱汉语思维束缚,改变以“与人有關的名词开头造句”的习惯,恰当运用以事物开头的表达,比如“昨天做数学作业时我想到了一个好方法”,除了说”I thought of a great idea when I did Math homework yesterday.”,还可以说”A great idea occurred to me when I did Math homework yesterday.”;最后,要善于用非主语成分起草句子,写出更加生动形象的句子,比如“由于位于沿海,这个城市交通便利”,除了说“This city has convenient communications because it locates on the coast”,还可以说“Located on the coast, the city enjoys convenient communications”
  3. Conclusion
  Rome was not built in one day. Only when we lay a solid foundation in vocabulary, grammar and sentence patterns, take part in more English activities, do more practice with correct methods in reading and writing in peacetime, can we really improve the ability to read and write.
