简文会,原籍广东南海(现在的广州市),出身贫寒,从小聪颖,少年勤学,远近称之为才子。南汉乾亨二年(公元918年),简文会参加南汉皇帝主考的殿试,一举夺得殿试第一名,高中状元,后官至吏部尚书右臣。后人在简文会的出生地南海县澜石区黎涌村建了一口简状元井,同时,族人也在广州市中山五路桂香街新盖了祖祠,以纪念这位刚正不阿的状元先人。
