哈巴安德是鸦片战争后较早来到中国的美北长老会传教士,也是该差会在粤传教活动的开创者。在华期间,他主要在澳门、广州等地活动,时间长达47年,兴办了诸如神学日校、普通男女中小学、格致书院这样的早期高等教会院校,参与近世教育革新,并积极开展华南地区的医疗事业,出版和发行反映中国现状的论著,反对鸦片贸易,让西方进一步了解中国。哈巴安德是当时对中国社会具有深刻了解的西方人士,他把西方现代教育、医学、天文、宗教等西方文化介绍到中国,促进近代中西文化交流。在早期来华新教传教士中占有一定的地位。
Haberdén was a North American Presbyterian missionary who came to China earlier in the Opium War and was the founder of the mission in Guangdong.
