Even though more than 40 producing countries compete for the buyer’s market, the world raw silk market is more or less monopolized. Only a few producers dominate - China, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam and North Korea. Due to the serious shortage of food in North Korea, the production of raw silk is gradually reduced and the export volume is limited. Vietnam is rapidly developing its raw silk trade, but its quality of production is very poor. Most of Vietnam’s raw silk exports are through illegal channels with an annual export volume of about 200 tons, which can not compete with China, Brazil and Thailand.
