Trident II (D5) ballistic missiles, manufactured by Lockheed Martin Space Systems, were successfully launched from the Kentucky (SSBN 737) ballistic missile submarine at the eastern test site off the coast of Florida. The launching test is yet another launch of a series of operational qualification tests on the Trident II (D5) strategic weapon. The purpose of these tests by the U.S. Navy is to identify the safety, reliability, standby status, and performance of the Trident II (D5) missile. 91 Trident Success Stops have been recorded in the “Trident” II (D5) submarine-launched ballistic missiles. The current series of tests, which began in December 1989, will continue. The director of the Navy's Strategic Systems Program said tests have demonstrated that D5 missiles outperform even the best performance expected and there are no other large ballistic missiles or space launch operations in the world
