To date, numerous articles have been published on various aspects of GaAs photocathodes, however, few reports have been reported on the use of GaAs in image intensifiers. Only a few articles have argued that image intensifiers with GaAs photocathodes (3rd generation) will prove a significant improvement over existing tubes. However, the published data make it hard to tell whether the third generation has reached the limit of its development or whether it can expect further improvements. In this paper, the published experimental and theoretical data are summarized and compared with the new experimental data of the third-generation image intensifier tubes developed at present. In order to determine the physical limits and process limitations of the third generation of image tube performance, the main parameters of the third generation image tube were studied one by one according to the accumulated data: sensitivity, discrimination, noise and life expectancy.
