早在战国时期,今湖南属楚地。据《史记·秦本纪》载:“秦昭王30年(公元前277年)蜀守若伐取巫郡及江南为黔中郡”。唐张守节在此处以《正义》注①引《括地志》②载:“黔中故城在辰州沅陵县西20里”。至秦始皇26年(前221年),分天下为36郡,于是“析黔中置长沙郡”(见《晋书·地理志》)。即将原黔中郡划分为黔中、长沙两郡。秦始皇统一后的黔中郡,辖境相当今湖南沅水流域、澧水流域、湖北清江流域、四川黔江流域及贵州东
