The format for passing interface data between subsystems such as weapons, sensors, and computers greatly affects the size, price and complexity of real-time avionics software. Because the MIL-STD-1553 data bus has entered many avionics systems, the high efficiency of the software is of paramount importance, and therefore better use of the data is subject to further improvement under the 1553 protocol. Improper formatting of data can adversely affect multiple components in the system. When developing a set of guidelines for interface definitions, consider the corresponding overhead issue. Unnecessary overhead is measured by the number of times data items in the block of data are accessed. The location of some data items should not be arbitrarily determined. The article analyzes the impact of those formats that cause excessive overhead. These guidelines greatly reduce the amount of work required to be done on data items before they are applied.
