According to a survey conducted at the University of Tokyo Exercise Forest and other universities in Hokkaido, the hybrid between Larix gmelinii (especially from the Thousand Island) and Japanese larch exceeds all other hybrids that have their parental shortcomings. They tend to be excellent parents in their ability to fight rodent and blight diseases and to make the spiral texture less angular. They are equally resistant to the canker disease caused by Encoeliopsis, which affects North Korean larch and other larches; they are in the middle of their parents in terms of resistance to early frost and early leaf decay. The height of the trunk also approaches or exceeds its parent. This advantage can last 15 years. After repeated trials and studies, we found that Larix gmelinii is low in affinity for its own pollen fertilization in the case of free pollination, whereas Larix kaempferi has a high affinity when the Japanese larch pollen density is large enough. In order to speed up the production of seeds, adult tree budding and hybridization experiments using early-maturing trees as parents are under way.
