In the context of the harsh teachings of the 17th century colonial era, The Scarlet Letter tells of a case of adultery in Massachusetts Bay, a North American colony in New England. In his work, Hawthorne’s focus is not on the adultery itself, but on the profound impact on the minds of the persons involved and their delicate moral conditions after the act. This article attempts to analyze the gender consciousness embodied in the works from the angle of the relationship between the sexes, centering on the several main characters in the works and through the revealing of their respective destinies.
