清水江文书是“15世纪以来当地苗、侗、汉各族人民生存、生活的实物见证”~①,反映当地民间社会生活的各个方面,典当文书作为其中一个大类,在当地乡村社会中持续时间长。《天柱文书》中显示该县最早的典当文书发生在乾隆年间,即竹林乡高坡村一组潘德清收藏的典田契约《乾隆七年十一月二十五日潘赞成典田契》~②,典当时间最晚的为翁洞镇黄巡村新屋组杨思林收藏的典田契约,即《公元一九五○年十月二十五日杨永旺典田契》~③。
