In this paper, a comparative clinical study of TCu220C and AIZA T IPCS 52 intrauterine devices (IUDs) was conducted in order to reduce the side effects and shedding rate of IUDs or to improve their contraceptive efficacy. The TCu220C is a T-shaped IUD with electrolyzed Collars, with a total copper area of 220mm-2. AIZA T IPCS52 is a hormone-releasing IUD that contains progesterone in the T-shaped trailing arm, which releases approximately 25 μg of progesterone daily. Between March 1980 and January 1983, 36 months, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bangkok Chulalongkorn University School of Medicine in Thailand, a total of 200 IUDs were placed on women practicing family planning. Subjects were randomized to one of two IUDs for hemoglobin testing and cervical smears for cytology. After 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months of follow-up, cervix cytology was performed every year.
