吴廷翰以“气”作为其哲学理论思维的核心话题,把宋明理学的道、太极、理、性等形而上范畴由气予以统摄贯通。首先,他认为气即道、理、太极,并建构了气体学理论思维逻辑体系;其次,他通过诠释气与道、太极、太虚、理的关系,凸显了气的统摄地位及其形而上本体的品格,并对气的内涵、性质、特征、形式进行界说,从而诠释了传统的心性话题,提出了气—心性一统论;再者,他以张载气学和朱熹的理气、知行、格致论作为理论基础,对心体学进行了批评。
