At different stages of urbanization in China, the differences in urbanization levels and the trends of change between regions are significant. Overall, during the 30 years before the reform and opening up, urbanization in the central and western regions was faster than in the east, and the urbanization tendencies among the regions tended to narrow. However, the two decades after the reform and opening up were opposite. The reasons for the differences in the level of urbanization between regions are complicated and need to be discussed more deeply and comprehensively. Statistical analysis shows that the differences in the level of inter-provincial urbanization in the history of New China are generally related to the level of socio-economic development. However, due to management and political considerations, as well as the urban setting standards and urban demographics of different historical periods Changes have an important impact on the differences in the proportion of inter-provincial urban population. The explanatory variables of the differences in provincial urbanization levels in different historical periods are very different. Estimates of regional urbanization differences since the implementation of the reform and opening up policy need more accurate and appropriate indicators.
