1942年6月,抗战进入白热化,这给中国带来的不仅是动荡的时局,还有经济的重创。由于物质匮乏,满目疮痍的中国物价逐日飞涨。如何赚钱维持生计,成了国人心中的头等大事。处于象牙塔中的文人们,也感知到了这种“生之艰”。著名作家郑振铎的妻子高君箴,有次买菜回家,发现忘了买丈夫最爱吃的莲藕,待到转回市场时,价格已经翻了一倍。那晚有朋友造访,谈及当时的形势,郑振铎对朋友说:“太可怕了,今后不知道该如何活下去。”
