Due to environmental issues, the demand structure of Japanese adhesives is shifting toward environmentally friendly products. In 2001, Japan’s production of solvent-based adhesives containing VOCs had plummeted from more than 90,000 tons in 1995 to 63,000 tons. The production of urea resin binders has dropped by 31% from the previous year, while the output of melamine resin binders and phenolic resin binders has increased by 15.2% and 16.6% over the previous year, respectively. Other environmental-friendly and high- Functional adhesives are also growing. The shrinkage of Japan’s domestic adhesive market has led its domestic adhesive manufacturers to step up their globalization strategy and hope to expand their business through overseas operations.
