《芥子园画传》传承了宋元以来文人画的教育思想。其在编著上,虽然很多是运用画工的口诀等形式,但这些形式经过之前及清代这些文人画家的运用和改造,《芥子园画传》这些近于画工之技的法式等,承载了各种文化品格和深刻的画理,在本质上区别了之前画工的粉本教学。作为《芥子园画传》之一的《芥子园画传·梅兰竹菊谱》便具备了以上的主要特征。《芥子园画传·兰竹梅菊谱》,是中国古代花鸟画科画谱和画诀的集大成之作,是中国画教材中谱诀类的经典之作,其作为成熟而经典的中国画谱诀,体现在两个方面:一是谱诀本身的形式;二是谱诀本身的形式中所涵摄的基本文化精神。前者主要体现为谱诀的法式本身,后者主要表现谱诀法式本身所体现和包含的理、意。前后两者互为表里。本文按照《芥子园画传·梅兰竹菊谱》的结构分两部分叙述其法与理和法与意及它们之间的表里关系。
